Class OnAir Intro.mp4

Kia ora and welcome to my Manaiakalani Google Class OnAir site. This is my fourth year teaching in a 1-1 Digital learning environment, and at Tamaki College in Auckland, New Zealand.

I teach Year 9, 11, 12 and 13 learners who all have their own Chromebooks as their basic learning tool.

I teach junior science to Year 9 and also have a Year 11 class of learners with a wide range of abilities. For Year 12 and Year 13 I teach senior Biology.

My learners are curious, energetic, open and diverse!

Term 1: Third Rock from the Sun

This term our topic is about a journey up and out from the centre of the Earth. We start by learning about the layers of the Earth and things affecting the surface such as volcanos and earthquakes - before moving outwards into space (using some physics to get there), then the moon and out into our Solar System. Can we learn about what is necessary for life on Mars?

Term 2: Wonderful World

This term our topic is about the world around us and indeed, us. It is a biology topic that focusses on life processes, unicellular living things, plant and animal cells. We may be integrating with social studies later in the term.

Term 3: Wonderful World continued..

This term we continue learning about the world around us and indeed, us. It is a biology topic that focusses finally on whakapapa and genetics. Later this term we will move on to learn about Light and Sight, in the context of KPop in Science.

Term 4: Year 13 Biology

This term we continue learning about the world around us and indeed, us. Students begin by learning about how humans can manipulate the genetic makeup of different organisms, and then move on to consider their personal perspectives (and focus on literacy) as we begin an internal that requires students to "develop an informed response to a socio-scientific issue."
