Direct Instruction
The children are being taught about what it means to promote an event. This is being done in the build up the annual Manaiakalani Film Festival. The purpose of this lesson is achieved through encouraging the children to share their ideas through audio and video. The children are then encouraged to listen carefully to each other's ideas and then record the ideas of others. As an independent/group task, the children were asked to create their own promotional movie.
Reflection
The children were asked to make a promotional movie for the film festival however the completed follow up videos ended up being about Pt England School/ Manaiakalani in general. I did initially worry that my instructions were not clear enough and that the children had not demonstrated understanding from the lesson. However, on a closer look, the videos did still promote the school from the eyes of the children. In fact, these children had managed to apply their new knowledge to a different context to that which we had been exploring.
I was pleased with the confidence the children showed in the initial webcam video creations and then how the children all engaged with these videos to learn from each other. This lesson provided a range of opportunities for the children to develop key competencies, in particular thinking and participating and contributing.
