Direct Instruction

In this lesson the students are working on their newly set reading goals at the beginning of the Term. This group of students has been working on making connections and predicting the text. Now they are learning to comprehend text by looking for clues in the text and notice new words and learn their meanings.

Extended Lesson Plan

The video shows students deciding on their reading goal for the Term, based on their current learning.

Over all reflection - I feel the lesson was very good because students understood how they could achieve their two goals that they had set for themselves. The first one was noticing new words and unknown phrases and the second one was about looking for clues in the text to answer questions. The second goal in particular required lot of attention as students tended to think but not re-read the text to look for clues to answer the questions. I feel that in this lesson, the students understood how they were going to achieve their goals.

What went well.

Lesson Content - Students understood what they were supposed to do to achieve their reading goal. They went through the process as they read the text and felt successful.

Lesson Pacing - The lesson was well paced and students moved on quickly from one idea to another.

Student Understanding - Students understood what they were supposed to do to achieve their reading goal. They went through the process as they read the text and felt successful.

Student Outcomes - Students understood how to look for answers as when I asked them the questions they straight away went to the part of the text where they could find related answers. This was not the case earlier as they would begin thinking what the answer could be instead of reading the text to find relevant information.

What still needs work.

Student Outcomes :- The goals need to be reiterated again and again so they can practice the skill of noticing new words, finding meanings of these words and re-read the text if they do not know answers to the questions. Students should also be given lots of opportunities to recycle their new vocabulary or otherwise they will forget it and new language would not be acquired.
