Reflection
Children responded well to using the RACE strategy. They liked having a clear way of responding to questions. It took them a while to get their head around the different elements, particularly E (Explain). I suspect they were overthinking it. Once I reassured them to state the obvious they found it easier. With further practice I am hopeful most will be able to use the RACE strategy with confidence.
We had an interesting discussion around Summarising in the small group session. When asked to summarise they seemed to go into great detail about what happened in the text (The character did this, then they did that etc). Through a discussion they eventually managed to connect with the bigger picture of the text rather than the smaller detail. This was good formative assessment and we’ll focus on summarising in the near future.
