Read a play aloud using expression and intonation to match the text

This lesson shows various elements of a lesson sequence in which children learn about reading with expression through the context of a play. It begins with a whole-class introduction where we focus on paying attention to punctuation. Towards the end of the video, I introduce the use of Google Vids and lapel microphones. The video shows only some elements of the lessons. Check out the extended plan below for details of the complete lesson sequence.

Reflection

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the students’ expression, acting, and recordings. Overall, they took the teaching on board and worked hard to ensure each of the success criteria was met. The students particularly enjoyed the active nature of the lesson, as they were able to move around, participate in practical activities, and collaborate with others. They also appreciated having choice in which play they performed, which helped increase engagement and motivation.

The lesson sequence took longer than I had initially anticipated, as there was a lot to work through and students needed time to practise and refine their performances. However, judging by the quality of the final recordings and the level of student engagement throughout, the extra time was well worth it.
