Explain how a text shows a particular point of view
This lesson shows various elements of a lesson sequence in which children learn how to identify the author’s point of view. It begins with a whole-class lesson before moving into small group instruction, allowing for more targeted support and discussion. Children then go on to complete a create task explaining how to identify the author’s point of view based on the lesson.
Reflection
Overall, the lesson went well, with children connecting with loaded words and the difference between fact and opinion. They were able to identify the author's point of view and explain their reasoning.
The lesson had too many different parts, which made it a struggle to get through. If I did it again, I would remove either the Hot Seat activity or the Extended Discussion. Interestingly, some children created a video explaining whether they think social media should be banned, rather than completing the actual task of explaining how to identify the author’s point of view. I suspect this was a case of them assuming what the create task was, rather than taking the time to look at it properly - or perhaps I didn’t set it up clearly enough. Next time, I will be very explicit.
