Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was:
Identify some text events and features, and discuss what they make the reader think about.
This video shows the setting up of a create task where students had to summarise a text and present their summary as song or rap. I started with showing them an example to get buy in then we discussed what features they would need to include to make their song/rap flow - putting it to a beat and using rhyme.
Reflection
The children enjoyed the lesson task and had fun creating and recording their raps/songs. The down side with recording using Garageband is how long it takes, particularly as many weren’t overly familiar with Garageband. The task was made longer due to the text being quite a complex one with loads of new vocabulary. It took the first week just to get through the text and unpack the vocabulary. The vocabulary is very difficult but well worth tending too. Though the text was difficult, the children found it interesting and it led to great discussions.
Next Steps
Further oppurtunities to write and record songs. The more they do it the easier it will get and the quicker they'll complete it.
