Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was:
Talk about the meaning and purpose of word consciousness
This video shows a group reading lesson about 'Word Consciousness'. We start with some fun word activities before unpacking what word consciousness is. The children then read a text, noting down any unfamiliar words to doscover the meaning later on.
Reflection
This was the first time I had done a lesson on Word Consciousness’ and it was a challenging one to deliver. I found myself getting muddled up with what I was saying at times and I don’t think I did the best job at teaching it. I found it challenging putting it into ‘kid speak’. In saying that, the children engaged with the content and appeared to connect with it. They also enjoyed the follow up activities. I’m sure as I continue to teach ‘Word Consciousness’ I will become more confident and proficient in it. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to have the extended discussion. We will do this in our next session.
Next Steps
Further discussion and lessons about word consciousness with the goal of having the children confidently talk about the meaning and purpose of it.
