Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was:
Identify some text events and features, and discuss what they make the reader think about.
Use the text events to identify a theme
This video shows a guided reading session about the short story , 'Man from the South' by Roald Dahl. It follows the Fountas & Pinnell guided reading model as taught in the Manaiakalani Reading Practise Intensive (RPI).
Reflection
There was a lot to get through in this lesson sequence which I find is the challenge of the Fountas & Pinnell model. There is a lot to get through in a 20 - 25 minutes session. However this does mean that children are engaged throughout because there is always something new happening. It’s not seen in the video, due to time, however I found the kids struggled to articulate what certain text events made them think about as a reader. This needed more scaffolding from me than I anticipated and eventually some of them got there. The children enjoyed the outrageous nature of the text and the somewhat dark content.
Next Steps
Further identification and discussion around what text events make the reader think about and how they can be used to identify the theme.
