Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to:
solve problems involving money using different strategies.
In this workshop, students had the opportunity to explore New Zealand coins, learn and use topic-related vocabulary (TIP chart), and create various combinations of coins to reach given totals. They practised different additive strategies to come up with their solutions.
Reflection
I believe that it was a good workshop with a range of learning opportunities for my students. They were hooked in by being asked to notice a lot of different things about NZ coins as a quick warm up (Maths talk).
Throughout the lesson, students actively participated in creating different amounts using NZ coins. I facilitated their learning conversations, encouraging them to apply their knowledge, test their strategies and prompt their thinking to notice and correct mistakes. At appropriate moments, I made connections to multiplicative and fractional thinking to seamlessly scaffold students' learning. I think that students’ conversations and thinking were evident in this episode.
They also enjoyed their digital follow up tasks.
Things to note
This workshop is followed by a problem-solving session to consolidate their learning and apply it in an authentic context relevant to their experiences and interests.
