Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to make ice cream and write detailed instructions for how to recreate this. The students needed to be able to use a range of different vocabulary to add detail to their writing so that someone else could pick it up and repeat the instructions. The students needed to use their own understanding of how to make ice cream in order to add the specific details.
This lesson shows the students making ice cream in small groups as well as taste testing the ice cream afterwards. This lesson then shows the students participating in brainstorming ideas for writing and then the writing in small groups to create detailed instructions on how to make ice cream.
Reflection
I think that this lesson went really well, it was a lot of fun and the students really enjoyed taking part in this lesson. I found that from completing the experiment that the students were able to add a lot more detail to their writing. There was lots of really good writing from this lesson and the students were really engaged with the content. I did break the class up into smaller groups and had one group making the ice cream at one time, this was manageable to start with however when the student got to the part of shaking the ice cream it diid get a little bit messy and exciting in the classroom. Thankfully I had my student teacher with me to help manage the students shaking the ice cream while I was working with another group to add the ingredients. I think if I was to do this lesson again I would make sure that we are all working on the same steps at the same time so that the class can be managed better and I can keep an eye on everyone in the classroom and have them all at the same stages and steps of making the ice cream.
Things to note
Some of the camera angles are a bit off in this video, I did have some of the students moving around with the cameras to show the process of shaking and making the ice cream. The audio for some of it is also a bit hard to hear due to the students being so excited about making ice cream there is a lot more background noise than normal.
