Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to be able to divide by creating equal sets. The students needed to be able to understand the concept of division and sharing equally. They also needed to be able to use their times tables knowledge to be able to solve more complex problems and see the relationship between multiplication and division.
The video shows a maths warm up activity with the whole class. This also shows setting up the number of the week task with all of my groups. This video then shows a small group lesson with my wind maths group as well as the students working as a group to complete the weekly task.
Reflection
I think that this lesson went well, in the end the students were able to grasp the concept of division being linked to sharing equally. Once they had been able to see this they were then able to link this to the times tables that they already know and started to see the link between multiplication and division. We had worked on multiplication the previous week so this really helped going into division this week. The students really love the warm up game that we play as a class and it is starting to get really competitive. I am hoping that I will be able to add in a larger sided dice as well as introducing decimals with the rocket game.
For this lesson I really had to go back to the basics of maths groups and what is expected during our sessions as the student started to just call out random answers rather than thinking about the answer and how they got the answer. This has highlighted something that I need to keep working on with the whole class to make sure that the students are really thinking about the maths strategies that they are using.
Things to note
I again had some camera difficulties with this lesson, my second camera died halfway through this lesson which is why there is only one camera angle for the second part of the lesson. I am still working on which is the easiest way to teach my maths groups as sometimes I need to use the tv as a modelling book and also to show the group tasks and how this relates to the learning for the week, we have been trialling the teacher table as well as the mat areas so the students aren’t used to sitting on the mat for whole class instruction as well as group work which is why they are quite restless and moving around a lot.
