Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was for students to create a recount about their year 5 and 6 camp experience. The students needed to be selective about vocabulary choices throughout the recount in order to add as much descriptive detail as possible.

The video shows a whole class lesson on setting up our writing task for the week. This lesson also shows students brainstorming ideas as a whole class as well as in small group by using a jam board. This lesson shows students sharing their writing with each other and reflecting about their experiences at camp.

Reflection

I think that this lesson went really well. The students were engaged with the task and really enjoyed recounting their experiences for camp. Using a jam board to brainstorm ideas was really useful as the students were able to go away and brainstorm in groups writing down their own ideas. We were then able to come back down as a group and look through all of these together. This was my first time using a jam board with the class and I think it went really well. It is definitely something that I will continue to use for my brainstorming as it is something that the students can continue to refer back to while they are writing. I wasn't really sure how it was going to go and I think that I did have too much content on the jam board for the students which is something that I will continue to work on. It was great to see that the students were engaged with the brainstorm rather than just talking about it as a group.

I really enjoyed the students being able to share their introductions with each other as it gave some of those students who didn't know what to write some ideas. I did have a few students who didn't go to the year 5 and 6 camp and I was really lucky my release teacher created a game for the students to play so they could write a recount about that instead. This was really helpful as it meant that all of the students were able to create a recount of some description by the end of the week. Overall I think this was a really successful lesson and I learnt a lot of new things along the way as well.

Things to note

I had a few technical issues with my cameras this week, the SD card ending up being full during one part of the session which is why the students are in different places. We had to restart the final part of the lesson. I was also experimenting with different camera angles with the second camera and unfortunately cut out some of the students which is why I have ended up mostly using the one angle. I also screen recorded my laptop as this lesson was happening so that I could show the Jam Board more clearly, however I accidentally deleted this to make room to load the videos to my laptop so wasn't able to include the closer up shots of the tv. Most of it is pretty clear in the videos but these can also be seen in more detail by clicking on the Jam Board link below. I did have some really good shots of the students working in groups but unfortunately the audio was not great so I have had to leave those out of this video but after each whole class part of the lesson the students worked in groups to brainstorm, complete their introduction and write their recount.

Week 7 - Year 5 & 6 Camp Recount

WALT:  structure a recount using detailed and descriptive language.

Instructions

Last week we wrote thank you letters to our camp helpers. This week we are going to create a recount about our experiences of year 5 and 6 camp. If you were someone who didn't go to camp you can create a recount about what you did during those three days. This week I am wanting you to use as much descriptive language as you can to help capture your audience as they are reading your recount.
