Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was for students to use clues within the text as well as their own knowledge to answer questions that require them to infer meaning. This lesson also asked students to think about the author's purpose for writing a text and drawing their own conclusions.
This lesson shows a guided reading session on the journal article called Journey to the Sea as well as the students working together after the session to discuss the text and complete the follow up activity.
Reflection
I think this lesson went really well, especially straight after our swimming lessons last week. Water safety is something that is really important to me and is a topic I do focus on during term 4 and it just worked well with being able to pair this with the learning that the students did down at the pool. I think this allowed the students to make connections with what they already knew and what they were reading to understand the text in more detail. We have been working on looking at the author’s purpose for writing a text for a few weeks now and it was good to see during our decisions that the students were able to share what they thought about why the text was written and what they had learnt from it. It was really nice to see some of my students who don’t usually speak up sharing their learning with the rest of the group and I felt that each of the students were able to share their ideas. One thing that was a bit tricky with this lesson was not having enough journals in the book room so we had to read the article on our chromebooks. We haven’t done as much as I would have liked with this during the year so there was a bit of a distraction with the chromebooks during guided reading and some of the students were trying to finish other work while they were waiting for others to finish reading but this is something we will practise.
Things to note
There was a lot of glare where my teacher table normally sits so I had to move my desk into the middle of the classroom. Two groups of my students for reading have the same text for this week and there were a number of students away at sports so I have mixed the two groups together for this lesson. Some of these students were really quiet with their responses so some of the audio is a bit hard to hear. Trying to fit all the students and myself around the table and not cut everyone off was a bit tricky also so there are camera angles that don't work very well.
