Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was for students to be able to create a detailed recount from an experience that we had in the classroom. Students were needing to focus on key areas of development in the recount such as topical and interesting vocabulary and paragraphing their ideas.
This lesson shows a whole class experience of the marshmallow challenge. This lesson also shows a whole class lesson on how to structure a recount. Finally this lesson shows students sharing their recounts in small groups.
Reflection
I really enjoyed this lesson. It was really great to see the students have to work together to create a marshmallow tower. It was really interesting to see the different groups working together and the ideas that each group had. They all had pretty out there ideas at the beginning but through trial and error found that they needed a secure base to ensure it would keep standing the higher the tower went. Once one group has figured this out it was interesting to see the other groups copy these ideas. I was also really impressed with some of the detail that the students were adding to their writing. They were thinking more about the audience and the purpose for their writing.
Things to note
There was a lot going on around the school with it being term 4 so the background noise of other classes is a bit louder than normal. Some of the student voices are a bit quiet in this video either because I had the microphone too far away or they just naturally speak quietly. I just added the students sharing their writing with each other at the end as the other discussion as my other footage was not usable. One of the groups I was recording putting the challenge together had a bit of glare which is why some of those parts are a bit dull.
