Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was for students to think critically about the text. Students also need to think about the relationship between characters and why the author chose to write this play.

This lesson shows a guided reading session where students are introduced to the play having the chance to read one of these characters during our guided reading session. This lesson also shows a guided reading session where students are asked questions about what they are reading. This lesson also show students coming up with questions to ask other characters from the play.

Reflection

I think that this lesson went really well, the students were really engaged with the text and reading a play is something different for them. I did find that I was having to lead a lot of the conversations where the students were reflecting and being critical about the text but this is something that we are working on and I am sure the students will begin to be able to have these conversations without prompting. I really enjoyed listening to some of the questions that students came up with to ask the characters from the play. This follow up task is one that we have been working on for the last few weeks and it was great to hear the students thinking more critically about the questions that they were asking rather than just literal questions from the book. This group has been working on group reading in order to allow for all of the students to share their thoughts and ideas during reading, however I found that they were a bit shy to share their ideas this could have been because of the cameras today. In reflection this is something that I need to work on to make sure that all students are sharing their thoughts and ideas.

Things to note

We have a lot going on in and around the school at the moment with cross country training and Manaiakalani film festival filming so our space is a little bit more restless than usual. There is also a lot more background noise than normal with other classes out and about around the school. I also have a really lovely stream of sunlight that comes into the classroom behind my teaching table so I have had to move my desk around to the middle of the classroom so that there isn't any glare in the shots which is why my desk is in the middle of the classroom. I thought that I had the camera set up in the perfect position but unfortunately it is slightly off centre which is a little bit annoying but doesn’t take away from the lesson and the content.

The students completed their interviews as their create follow up task and have shared these on their blogs, if you would like to watch the video in full for each interview check out the students blogs below.
