Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was to understand the expectations for visiting the school library & read independently finding a book of interest.

The video shows a whole class lesson on setting up rules and expectations for visiting the library. After outlining those expectations we headed off to the library where we read a shared book as a class and then the students were able to select a reading book of their choice. Finally this lesson shows students working together after reading their books to discuss what the book is about and any recommendations so far while completing the task for this learning experience.

Reflection

I think that this lesson went really well. My class were really excited to visit the library and really embraced the etiquette and rules that we had discussed before visiting the library. I think that it was perfect timing to visit the library in week 4 as we had been talking about this since week one. Having the students design their own bookmarks prior to going to the library was really helpful as well as it was something they were excited to use. I find gluing the library barcode to the back of the bookmarks really helpful too as it makes issuing the books at the end so much easier. This was a very teacher lead lesson with lots of talking and explaining on my part due to setting up routines and expectations. Throughout the year I do hope that these sorts of lessons will become more learner driven and less of me talking.

Things to note

This lesson was filmed over several days as we went to the library for the first time right at the end of the day. Some of my class were out at extension on the first day we visited the library so I took these students during some release time that I had throughout the week. This is why you will see a mixture of different students across the video. This was also our first Class OnAir episode of the year so some of the students are a little bit shy to share in front of the camera but I know this will change throughout the year. The audio for this seems to be a bit patchy I think it mostly has to do with my placement of the microphone. When we were in the library I was trying to demonstrate a quiet whisper which is why the audio sounds a little bit different in this part of the video.
