Direct Instruction

Learning Intention -  Make connections between texts and own life experiences, using more sophisticated texts.

Students the day before read the text 'Man and Sea', this text is based on a tattooing ceremony based in Samoa.

This lessson is based on learners collaborating on questions to ask Mrs Ilaoa, they then interview her to learn more about the 'Tatau'.

Reflection

This was a rich lesson where students were able to start to lead conversations and ask more in depth questions to further their learning.  My learners were intrigued about the 'Tatau' as this is something that relates to them and their whanau.  I enjoyed the discussion where we were coming up with the questions to ask Mrs Ilaoa, my learners had so much they wanted to learn, the engagement was great.  I should have got my learners to discuss more about their prior knowledge before the lesson, you'll see throughout the lesson that my learners had great prior knowledge that they could have shared at the start of this lesson.  I am learning how to conduct extended discussion in my reading groups, I thought doing an interview with another teacher was a good start, I just have to remember to step back and let my learners lead the discussions.  (6.12) The reflection was great as my learners were able to share their learning from the interview! Our vlogs were great, was really impressed with how my learners did!

Things to note

I was so annoyed that a third of the way into this lesson my video camera died that was facing the teacher, so unfortunately during the interview you can only see my learners.  I thought that the learning was so rich that I just had to keep it and use this.
