Direct Instruction

Learning Intention -  Locate and summarise ideas e.g. skim and scan, (identify key words, topic sentences a and key questions)

Students read the text 'Staying Afloat', we summarized the text and answered comprehension questions.  We also looked at how to approach unknown words.

I get students to read the text before they see me and will get them to read chunks aloud with their group as well.

Reflection

This was a fun activity with a lot of student engagement, it was great seeing my learners wanting to participate in discussion and share their ideas confidently.  I think it would have been a good idea to have a labelled life jacket for learners to see, this would have made it easier to talk about the different parts of a life jacket.  I spent a lot of time going over the word smug, I could see that my learners didn't understand what the meaning of the word was, hence the reason I read the full sentence to show them the context of why the word was used to help them.  At the end of the lesson we had a bit of fun showing our 'smug' look, but I wanted to reinforce what the word was and how we use it.

Things to note

The audio struggles to pick up when the kids are reading.
