Direct Instruction
Learning Intention - Focus on punctuation and sentence structure of a six sentence story.
Introduce the lesson, you can only use 6 sentences. Talk about sentence length and structure, how do we use punctuation correctly?
After learners had this lesson I gave them 30 minutes of independent writing to complete their activity.
Sometimes I will get students to read their pieces of writing in small groups or the class.
Reflection
This was a fun and really enjoyable lesson for my learners, I loved the curiosity my learners had towards New York so I decided I'd take this moment to foster this curiosity and get my students talking more about New York by using Google Maps and doing some research together. If you go to 4.10 you can see my learners start sharing their 1st sentences in our small groups, as one of my learners was sharing you can see I stopped him and 'shut him down' as he was reading, this had a really negative effect on him and he straight away started deleting his writing, you can then see me back track and give him lots of positive feedback, I wanted to show this as we all make mistakes as teachers, it's these that we learn from the most, I should have waited until he was finished and asked him if there was anyway we could shorten his sentences, and worked together to help, the writing he had done was great!
Things to note
I'm still adjusting the mic settings so it is just as loud for all my learners in the group rather than learners that are close to the mic.
