Direct Instruction
Learning Intention - How to write an introduction for an explanation essay.
Introduce the lesson, make a connection to the writing we did last week and start with a discussion about the election.
After learners had this lesson I gave them 30 minutes of independent writing to complete their activity.
Sometimes I will get students to read their pieces of writing in small groups or to the class.
Reflection
This was a fun lesson to teach, my learners really benefit from having discussions and brainstorming their ideas before they go off and write as they have ideas written on the whiteboard that they can refer back to. When we voted on the 3 ideas, I should have brainstormed more ideas as this would've helped them come up with more ideas when they were writing. At the end of this lesson I also could have got my learners to share their writing, I think this would've given them more ownership and made them proud of their work. It was really important to go over the structure of an introduction so my learners could understand how an introduction is supposed to be written.
Things to note
This is a whole class lesson, so unfortunately you aren't able to see some students that are sharing their ideas, however, you can still hear them.
