Direct Instruction

This video is a snapshot of a DMIC Maths Lesson which focuses on the share component, this is where the children share either their answer or a particular element of a problem the teacher wants to bring to attention. In this case, the girls share how they solved the problem.

The learning intention is to solve problems involving decimals by adding or subtracting and explaining and justifying the solution.

Reflection

On reflection to this lesson, it is very hard to show someone a DMIC maths lesson as a lot of professional development goes on within year to get the teacher and children to where they are now. This lesson was a good question, lots of different ways to solve the problem. Most of the children are still learning to add decimals, and this was clear. A benefit of this lesson was to see most of the children understanding the place value of where the decimals sit with the place value house. Being able to break this down into tenths, hundreths, and thousandths… is important. I would have liked to have more input from the children watching Ava and Adrianna. As the teacher I should have been using more talk moves strategies to create deeper understanding. My next steps are to work on using talk moves to encourage more discussion while the children are sharing their learning.

Things to note

At St Francis of Assisi are maths program is based on DMIC maths. It is a three-year program, and we are in the second year of this program. We receive mentoring, professional development, and research on achievement is taken place. Within the lesson in the video, I have 30 children working in the classroom. 15 working with me, and 15 working independently.
