Direct Instruction
This video is a reading workshop group, reading a play called "Waiting".
The learning intentions for this lesson are:
Read fluently (with focused attention) and have a variety of strategies for making meaning.
Consistently draw conclusions and get meaning from text by 'reading between the lines'.
Reflection
The recording of the lesson feels a little jumpy, as I tried to showcase the focus of the create. Before, during, and after the children have worked on their creates. The TikTok profile was a very popular option to showcase the main characters in the story. The children enjoyed being able to showcase their plays, and I know this will support their PBL project performance at the beginning of the next term. On reflection, I am not sure for each play we read if the children could tell me the main message and what the author's purpose was. This is something to think about for next time.
My next steps are to ensure that the meaning of each play is expressed within the children’s create task. Not just the character development.
Things to note
This is one of my reading workshop groups. These readers are ability-grouped occurring to their reading age. The children see me on Tuesdays and Thursdays and work independently on their work on the other days of the week. This is the second lesson of the week.

Below starting on the left-hand side is a copy of the weekly slides the children use to refer to their reading tasks. This is where the children find everything they need for the next. In the middle is the Tumu Hub's Library where the children can find a range of different plays. The first line is Level 2, the middle is Level 3 and the last line is Level 4 journals. The children in this reading group were focusing on the Level 4 journals. On the right-hand side is a copy of the create choices the children had. Each link will take you to a template, or website to create the chosen choice.
