Direct Instruction
This video is a reading workshop group, reading a text about World War 1 Mascots.
The learning intention for this lesson is to identify at least one important idea and justify why it is important and to use reference sources (e.g. online/dictionaries and thesauruses) to identify the meanings of new words.
Reflection
The children were interested in this topic, and having already read a few different pieces of text about war and the ANZAC’s it was good to be able to showcase their engagement levels. This reading workshop group, love to talk about their reading and share their opinions. This lesson was no different. You can only see a small portion in the video, but they did a lot of discussion with their partners unpacking the questions and any new vocabulary. The lesson that followed this lesson dived deeper into the sentence structure of the text and how we could make connections with it. Overall I was happy with the children’s response to this reading text. My next steps are to ensure I just focus on a small chuck in the text, and we pick it apart piece by piece. Sometimes it is easy to feel like you have to teach or read with the children the whole text and this isn't always the best option.
Things to note
This is one of my reading workshop groups. These readers are ability-grouped occurring to their reading age. The children see me on Tuesdays and Thursdays and work independently on their work on the other days of the week. This is the first lesson of the week.
