Direct Instruction

This video demonstrates a focus session on our Project Based Learning (PBL). Our focus for this term is around the Resilience Project and the lesson shows one of the elements of our PBL topic. This is a writing lesson where the children are working on planning their final project.

The Resilience Project

The learning intention for this lesson is to show an understanding of the Resilience Project, and how this will help build a resilient community.

Driving Questions for PBL:

How do we help build a resilient community?

How do we as students of St Francis of Assisi School do our bit to grow a resilient school community?

Reflection

The children were excited to get their project ideas written on their document because as soon as they did they could begin their project - the creating!

It is great to see the children talking confidently about The Resilience Project - a lot of learning has taken place for this to happen. In terms of the writing lesson, I wished I wrote more vocabulary choices on the board for the children to use within their sentences. I also did not get to show this within the video but I worked with the children to demonstrate what a full sentence after a question looks like. Next time I will ensure this teaching is a part of the video.

The next steps for the children are to complete their final project and present these to their parents. My next step is to ensure I can help more children by building their vocabulary and then encouraging them to include this within their sentences.

Things to note

St Francis of Assisi is taking part in a program (Australian-based) called The Resilience Project. This is a year focus and something the children will be working on weekly to improve their well-being. The three main terms used are Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) The children have been learning about these, and what they can do to improve and use them in their everyday life. This lesson shows the children starting to look a the beginning of their project, which leads to them presenting something at our School Showcase. This is where other children in the school get to see what the children are working on and they also get to share this with their families. Our School Showcase is in Week 3 of Term 2. Further learning and focus follow this lesson. I am working with one of my writing groups, which is 10 children. The rest of my class is working independently on the same document within the video.
