Direct Instruction

This lesson is the follow-up lesson from my first lesson. It is the children unpacking their data based on a reading survey they completed.

What Kind of Reader are You?

The learning intention for this lesson was to discuss connections between the text and our life experiences.

It was also to work on how to choose a 'good fit' book to read independently and for personal enjoyment.

Reflection

Throughout the lesson, a few different times I had the children say “Miss Gill is this our data, about us?” I was like yes it is about you. The excitement and engagement level from there just continued to grow and this supported the statements that were made. The children were able to consider how we change this and then also what might need to be done in our reading workshops.

Setting some group ground rules was a great way to ensure all the children in the group were having a say, and then agreeing to this means that every time we have a reading workshop we can refer to these goals and make sure we are meeting these goals.

In terms of creating a book cover, the children in this group love the book covers they have made so much that they want to create the story that goes with it. Hold tight for the finished novels! I will be making sure I get the first autographs!

Things to note

This is one of my reading workshop groups. These readers are ability-grouped occurring to their reading age. The children see me on Tuesdays and Thursdays and work independently on their work on the other days of the week. This is the second lesson of the week and follows on from my first video of the week, you can find this lesson here
