Direct Instruction
This video focuses on another Champion for Peace (Global Peacemaker) Malala Yousafzai.
The students will
Use reference sources (e.g. online/ dictionaries and thesauruses) to find the meanings of new words.
Make connections between texts and real-life experiences.
Identify keywords that will help with understanding.
Identify at least one important idea and justify why it is important.
Reflection
In the lesson, I wanted the children to think about how Malala Yousafzai embodies Peace, and how strong her belief in Education for all is. The children took a while to get there and a lot of redirection around questioning was needed. By the end of this lesson, the children have a strong understanding of equality in gender and understand how important a dream is. The next steps for the children are to be able to see their goals and dreams as something that could become real later in life. In terms of my teaching, it would have been good to be able to compare and contrast the differences between Malala life in Pakistan versuses children at St Francis.
Things to note
This is a reading workshop group, the children's second workshop for the week. We have been looking at different Peacemakers around the World and this is the third week of focusses on a new Champion for Peace.
