Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was to understand that the split digraph a-e makes an ae sound when reading.

The video shows our before reading activities. These activities take place before we use our selected text.

To begin, tamariki review known sounds then practicing their new grapheme. Next, tamariki practice target words from the Phonics Plus Book 'Be Brave', by writing on individual whiteboards. Tamariki then practice their Kete Kupu (non-decodable words) using flashcards. Finally, tamariki make and break words using letter tiles.

Reflection

We had to move our reading to after lunch. You can definitely see that this lesson is not run during our usual reading block. Tamariki are mostly engaged but appeared to be very tired.

In the during read section, tamariki made great connections to the context of the book. Being in a bilingual studio where we do kapa haka and perform often, they were able to explain the emotions they felt when they were last on stage. This was a great lead into our circle time.

Things to note

After completing the before reading activities, tamariki will read two pages from the selected reader. This is not shown in the video.

This group will see me four times a week. Today was their first lesson of the week. Tamariki in this rōpū are working in the higher end of Tupu from the Phonics Plus scope and sequence.
