Direct Instruction
In this lesson children are learning to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals to solve problems. In this lesson you will see me working with a maths group called the cubes. We will talk about the context for adding and subtracting decimals before applying this to the context of building/buying a life on a new planet. Children will create their houses, gardens, playground etc in Minecraft before explaining their thinking in a sketch note.
Reflection
This lesson was full of excitement and fun. The children love a challenge and this really provided them with that. The discussion was great and having the children work in pairs really helped them to consider what they wanted to buy and how they could add this. The children did find the maths a large step up from the adding of decimals we have been doing however it provided a great opportunity to find errors and understand why we made them. Having the minecraft element was so much fun and made the problem more realistic for the children.
Things to note
The lighting wasn't great in this new part of the classroom which I apologise for. We also had a lot of movement when at times meant heads were blocking the view of me or the child speaking.
