Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was for students to identify the number of tens in 3 digit number and understand how this relates to multiplying and dividing by ten

The video shows the set up on our Xtramath program and MathWhizz. Then a group lesson in which the Cubes group work to understand Place Value and specifically how understanding the number of tens in a large number.

Reflection

The passion for math that these children have is incredible. I loved the way they enjoyed the struggle and the thinking that went into understanding the tens in 4 digit numbers. I noticed one child kept feeling he had the answer but allowed him to wait well; others shared their process and this was valuable for all members of the group. It was great that after all the discussion you see in the video children worked in pairs to come up with their own numbers and identify how many tens. So often children get stumped by big numbers and big words and it was great to see the joy understanding them can bring.

Things to note

Due to a slow roll out this is the first week that children are using Chromebooks in the classroom. It has been great but also means that things take us longer as we embed the CyberSmart practices and learn about these new devices.
