Direct Instruction

The learning intention for this lesson was to form and communicate ideas and information about a topic.

The video shows where a few students are up to in their individual projects, followed by a group discussion on the mat to reflect on prior learning and build on what they have created so far.

Reflection

It is really interesting watching this video back and seeing the similarities between each child's responses to me about their projects. They were all very confident with explaining where they were up to and had some creative ideas however no one was yet making links to our three subtopics that we had previously learned about (Sustainability, Cultural Appropriation and Social Consciousness). I didn't express it explicitly in the Learning Intention however in the NZ curriculum achievement objectives (English), it states that at Level 4 of the curriculum students should be learning "to form and express ideas and information with increased clarity, drawing on a range of sources." I can see that I need to spend more supporting students to draw information from multiple resources when sharing learning through 'create.'

Things to note

In the discussion in the second half of the video, I have cut out the extended conversations that were had. It is important to note that I supported students in making connections with each idea they came up with. For example, when we talking about whether certain materials should be used, we discussed use of animal products like leather and historically, whaling.
