Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to develop an overarching understanding of a topic through research. In particular, the children were learning about the history of protests in Aotearoa and were learning key strategies for researching.
The video shows some of the instruction for a collaborative learning experience as well as students participating and contributing in the experience which was designed to support students in forming a broad/overarching understanding of the term's topic.
Reflection
This lesson was a great introduction to the topic for the term - Protests in Aotearoa/NZ. All children were able to participate and I was able to observe children’s researching skills as well as their ability to work independently as well as collaboratively (Note: This was my first lesson this year with this combination of children). I was also able to observe the children’s ability to manage self (one of the key competencies) and follow instructions.
When trying to introduce a topic and gift the children with new knowledge, it is a real challenge not to talk too much! When watching the video back, I realised I talked too much rather than spending time finding out what the children already knew on the topic. It is clear that some children are not fully engaged in the introduction.
Watching the video back, I realise that I can be making my explanations much more clear and concise. This is something to improve in my teaching going forward.
Things to note
The Creative Space is a difficult space to talk with a whole class or a small group. With the year 7s and 8s, I try not to have them sitting on the carpet too much. The oval circle on the chairs works for small amounts of time however if for an extended amount of time, it would be best to reassess how we sit.
