Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to reflect on and identify the text features the author uses for particular purposes and evaluate what I have read.
This lesson shows a guided reading session where students are learning to reflect on key features that the author has used to create the text that they are reading along with being able to evaluate what they have read. This lesson shows students having constructive conversations about the text and their own thought and opinions. This lesson also shows students sharing their final task with each other and comparing the main ideas.
Reflection
I think that this lesson went reasonably well, we had a lot of really great detailed discussions about the text and what the author wanted us to understand and know. This group of students love to have discussions and share ideas and we are learning at the moment how to have constructive conversations when we don't necessarily agree with each other. I really enjoyed teaching this lesson as I feel that the students grasped the concept of the authors purpose and were beginning to have extended discussions when working on the follow up activity as a group. I also found the students were starting to listen to each other during the discussions and sharing their ideas more constructively rather than talking over each other.
Things to note
This was filmed during alert level orange where mask wearing was optional which is why some of the students are wearing masks and some of the were not. I had to move my classroom around a little bit as there was too much sunlight around where my teacher table normally sits which is why it looks like the rest of my classroom is empty. There is quite a lot of background noise in this episode as other classes were outside completing their cross country training as well as other classes doing art outside.
