Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to find and summarise information by identifying keywords and main ideas from the text that students have read.
The video shows the beginning of a guided reading session looking at our first text of the week. This also shows my students working together to create a summary and review as a group. This lesson shows more of how I set up guided reading in the classroom with a detailed look at the first page, reading as a group then asking and answering questions.
Reflection
I think that this lesson went really well, my students were engaged with the reading material and were able to link what they were learning about in the text to what we have been discussing in class. The conversations and discussions that we had as a group while reading were really constructive and linked really well to our focus topic of the week. I think that this lesson went well as it is a topic that my students are really passionate about and love learning about so the buy in from my students was a lot easier. I did film this lesson during the middle block of the day so my students in the background were a little more restless and moving around a lot more than they would during our normal reading session time but I think they did very well considering.
Things to note
This was filmed during covid level orange where mask wearing was optional for students and teachers which is why some of my students are wearing masks and some are not. One of my cameras seemed to loose focus while I was filming so it does cut in and out a bit in some of the footage. As mentioned above the rest of my class and shared space was a bit restless at the time of filming which is why some of the cuts between conversations and discussions may seem sudden. I also needed to move my teaching table as the sun streams through right behind where I sit so this was also another element that caused a little bit of distraction and change.
