Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to make connections between prior knowledge and examples within the text in order to understand more abstract ideas in the text.
This lesson shows a guided reading session where students share prior knowledge around feelings to make connections with the story that we are reading. This lesson also shows the students completing the follow up task as a group.
Reflection
I think that this lesson went really well. The students really loved this text and there were lots of laughs throughout the lesson with discussions of the long-drop as well as how the characters were described and acted when they first found the possum. I really enjoyed the discussions that we had overall and I really wish that I could have shown the full lesson but it would have been way too long! I have found that having an overall topic for the week has been very beneficial for my students as it has helped with making connections with prior knowledge and being able to link this to the text. The other benefit that I have seen is the understanding of new and unfamiliar vocabulary as I try and use the words from the text as our spelling lists for the week. I really loved this lesson with how engaged the students were and also how much fun we had being able to discuss the text in detail. With it being fun there was also lots of learning that went on which was really great to see.
Things to note
This lesson was filmed when covid restrictions were lifted so mask wearing is now personal choice for the students and teachers, you will see that some of my students still choose to wear masks during class time and some choose not to. Another thing to note is that I have just cut sections from the discussions that I thought were important to the text and also what I wanted the students to get out of it. I would love to have shown the whole lesson but that would have been over half an hour of a lesson and discussion so I have just picked out the key parts that I think were important for this learning intention as well as the interesting discussions that we had as a group. I seem to have messed up the camera shots just a little bit with this group as unfortunatley some of my studnets are not being able to be seen in full view, I have tried to edit around this but there will be some parts where you wont see the child talking directly.
