Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was to continue reading learning while students were at home isolating.
The video shows hybrid learning while we had a large number of students in our team isolating at home. We decided to move to a hybrid model where there was learning and meets available to those students who were learning from home and also learning available for those who were face to face learning. This shows two online meeting sessions one that involves students reading aloud and the other showing the response to text questions in the second meet of the day.
Reflection
I think that this lesson went really well, I had a lot more children today want to read aloud to the rest of the group. The pervious days it had been a bit of s struggle get students excited about reading online. It was really great to see so many students from my own class keen and eager to share their ideas and read online. I have found that turning the response to text into a challenge with the hands up tool has been really helpful in getting students engaged and excited about their reading and learning from home. I did have to adjust and change how we did the quiz towards the end of the session as one of my students was just to quick at answering the questions and won the hands up part of the game all the time. I also found that having the same content for my students at home and the students in front of me made a huge difference in the transition back to school for those students who have been isolating.
Things to note
This was filmed in one of the quiet rooms at school the first part of the lesson was filmed during our first online meeting session at 9am and the second session was filmed at our 12pm session. Another thing to note is that not all of these students are currently in my class or in year 5 some of these students are in year 6 and part of the other classes in our team. I was running all of the online learning sessions from school. Some of the other teachers in my team who where isolating and feeling up to it also joined in on some of our online meets to help out and also relate to our students who were isolating at home. I have added in some shots of the kahoot that we played with the class at the end of the session this was run by Migi Siō one of the other teachers in our team. I did also have some technical difficulties with the internet connection so relied on the teachers at home Sarah Tuiā and Migi Siō to assist with some parts of the lesson.
