Direct Instruction: Sketching Koru Patterns
Students are using their knowledge of shape and space to draw an image that could represent them and their family.
This video shows a lesson on sketching and learning how to form koru patterns.
Reflection: Students even though at Year 7 and 8 doesn't mean they have had a lot of experience drawing much less draw korus (which considering our heritage I was surprised). I should have given them more time to practise this part and not made it so much about the final piece of art. Both single koru and two koru growing from a single stem.
Things to note: Due to various stages of isolating and students returning to school, this lesson was done a few times and I had students at different stages during the videoing.

Koru Sketches - Part 1
We are learning to sketch, draw ngā koru.
We are learning to use all the page to create an interesting design.
Instructions:
Discuss, list what 2 dimensional shapes are (that could be used)
Discuss what odd numbers are ( this is the number of ngā koru that will be use, prevents prevents the need for the image to look symmetrical)
Show examples of ngā koru and how they are used to create a range of patterns. Ask children where they have seen the koru pattern before in real life.
Students record in drawing book (or on paper) the shape and number they are going to use. (prevent confusion, later.
Start trying to draw koru patterns.
Draw shape twice to create a border koru grow from the inside border or can be relief/negative and drawn from the outside edge.
