Direct Instruction: Reflecting and Comparing a Character's Growth and Value
Students are learning to lead the discussion around the growth of a character.
This video shows a discussion helping the students to dig deeper for examples from the text to support answers
Reflection:
Things to note: I am doing Characterisation as part of a Year 7 and 8 research project, providing myself with lots of PD. I have found it really interesting so far. We are using a novel the girls have chosen as a group. The task for this is the same as the boys group but this group I was focusing on student lead discussion.

Character Study
We are learning to use supporting evidence from the text to show how a character grows.
We are able to reflect on the decision and events in the story to show how they have affected the character.
Instructions:
Students read through the story independently or with a buddy. This is to familiarise themselves with the story, this group usually chooses to read their novel during DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time.
Reread a page/chapter so students have the part for discussion fresh in their mind.
Previously we have discussion true and false statement about the character in this novel, we have also written Character bios of cartoon character and character we would like to have use in our writing.
Group time: Remind students the purpose for reading today.
Refresh with the group, how the character was described at the beginning of the book. Discuss events from chapter summaries and how these events might have affected the character.
Follow up task on slides fill in the blanks to show why this character is important.
