Direct Instruction

This lesson students are making estimations and subtracting decimals.

Learners start with a mapping warm up - GeoGuesser.

Learners will use MyMaps to plot different places in our community - Glen Innes. Learners will then make estimations of how far each place in our community is from each other.

In small groups we will then go over using subtraction strategies to solve decimal problems.

I spent time sitting with each group helping them through parts where they were a little bit stuck or if they just needed some motivation.

Reflection

GeoGuessr was a massive hit, my learners really enjoyed learning about the area they were dropped in and trying to get as close as possible to the mark, they were going on Google Maps to try and solve exactly where it was. MyMaps took a lot of scaffolding as this was an app they were unfamiliar with, after letting them have a play they started understanding how to manoeuvre through the app. In my next lesson I will focus on subtracting decimals over the tenth, as this was something they struggled with, I will still try keep the context of distances between locations as this was something they really enjoyed.

Things to note

I taught a lesson the previous day about making estimations of time between different locations, we used Google Maps for this. This is the link to that activity if you would like to use this prior to this activity, I felt that this lesson went well after teaching the first one.

  • Subtract decimals with 2 decimal places.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:

  • give close estimates based on different distances you've measured.

  • Use different strategies to solve subtraction problems.

Calculating Distances - GI

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. File, make a copy of this slide deck.

  2. Make predictions based on how far you think each location is from each other.

  3. Measure the distance between your chosen locations.

  4. Find the difference between your estimation and the actual distance.

  5. Once you have completed this activity, post it on your blog with a task description.
