Reflection: We had a lot of fun with this short poem. I really enjoy finding ways for students to experience things from outside their everyday world through often through the use of videos. I'm trying to provide the students in my class with a range of texts and text types about a topic to broaden their understanding of the topic and to deepen their exposure to different types of literature. Also, the best way to understand figurative language is to experience it. After watching the animated conductor, they were able to see how much he looked like a bird flapping his wings as he conducted the musicians.
Please Note: This text actual planning and task for this text was planned for the two groups you see during most of the discussion. However, due to the way that we move our students for certain subject areas and the timing of the other teacher's classroom release, I ended up with students not in my literacy class in the room while filming. I decided to begin the lesson with the whole class to expose them all to the discussion and poem knowing that once the video played they would all stop and watch anyways. After hearing the poem, those from the other literacy class moved to one area of the room to complete their own writing tasks while those in my reading groups worked to complete their learning tasks.
