Tens and Ones.mp4

Direct Instruction

The learning focus for this lesson was to identify how many tens and ones are in who numbers.

This episode is of a smaller maths group. This group had done a lesson prior to this lesson to introduce them to place value. Throughout both of these lessons the children were able to explore the concept of place value using the 'jelly beans' (maths beans). First we practiced modelling numbers using the equipment. Then the children were tasked with packing orders that came into the "Jelly Bean Factory". This episode captures the task being explained, modelled and then children working to complete it.

Extended Lesson Plan

Reflection: I remember feeling very flustered while filming this episode. I had tried to set the rest of my class up with an independent Maths activity, but as I am sure many teachers understand - it didn't end up being very independent. Feeling flustered, I got a bit muddled when explaining the 'create' part of the lesson. Luckily, the children are familiar with Explain Everything and were able to complete the activity the way I had envisioned. Using the record tool on Explain Everything is a great way to capture evidence of student learning and understanding.

Things to note: I work in a modern learning environment and have two other classes working either side of my teaching space, apologies that the children's responses can't always be heard that well. Whilst I worked with this Maths group the rest of my class were given a maths dice game to play.
