Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson is to be able to understand that song/rap is a form of writing.
I will be looking for children to identify features within the song - similes, inferences and imagery.
This lesson is an introduction to the week's final outcome of creating a rap. Written and performed.
The children will need to focus on presenting their work in a range of forms. Use personal voice to add effect and use a range of written features to engage the audience.
Reflection
This lesson was a writing workshop, time seemed to go so quickly when teaching this lesson. In general, I was pleased with the lesson content around lyrics as a form of writing - and the children understood this. This idea had an end goal for the remainder of the week and it was good to see the children were excited to see where this was going to go. The song “Mean” had a clear message, and the lyrics had multiple examples of strong language features. I was pleased with choosing this as an example. The children were able to find similes and imagery but struggled to be able to identify if they were inferring the text. It was good to be able to talk about this throughout the lesson and continue to grow on this progression. If I was to teach this lesson again, I would spend more time on the 3 different categories of bully, bystanders and target. I skimmed the surface with this activity and didn’t put enough emphasis on this.
Things to note
This is a writing workshop group of 20 children, the remanding children in the Tumu Hub were working either attending a workshop or working independently.
