Direct Instruction:
This lesson is part two in a series of maths lessons on measurement. In this lesson, students learnt about the difference between a Metre and a centimetre. They then, converted some centimetre measurements to metres before heading outside to create a scale drawing of the solar system in metres.
Reflection: This was a very fun lesson to do with this group of students. Due to the timing of the lesson, we moved into the foyer of our school before heading outside, which was great to get the small group of students away from the rest of the class for this short bit of time. I had hoped to film this lesson earlier in the term across our entire back field and onto the reserve to share our scale model with the rest of the school. However, due to time constraints and the weather, we were unable to do so.
Things to note: In the video, you can clearly see and hear one of the students playing with a chalk bucket during the lesson. It is much more apparent in the video footage than it was during the lesson due to the placement of the microphone while filming. However, he was engaged in the lesson and participated appropriately.

WALT: how to use a metre stick to measure in metres.
LEARN:
We are going to learn how to use a ruler to measure in metres.
CREATE:
How far away is each planet from the sun? Let's work together to use our rulers and measure the distance (in metres) each planet is from the sun. Do you think we'll be able to fit the outer planets in our metre scale model?
SHARE:
We'll make a movie of ourselves measuring using a metre stick across the hardcourt to share on our blogs.
