Direct Instruction:
In this lesson, students are participating in a guided reading session for the non-fiction text, "Exercise for Everyone" (PM+ Silver L23). This is their first time reading a non-fiction text as a small group this year. So we are going through the various structural elements of a non-fiction text and how to use them. Students will also be using the book's "Think and Talk" moments to help facilitate group discussion of this kind for the first time this school year.
Reflection: I went into this lesson thinking that perhaps my three Year 4 students would have a bit more awareness of a non-fiction text than the three Year 3 students. However, as shown in the video, they were all at about the same starting point. The boys are definitely more willing and confident to share their thinking in a group setting, and I leant that I need to be more mindful of that during the future group sessions.
Point to Note: We did a second follow up task using this book as a resource, which can be seen in my next episode.
