Direct Instruction

This lesson shows my Reading class talking about what has happened so far in the story 'The Magic Finger' by Roald Dahl. This is the first chapter book that I have read to them over multiple sessions and they were not used to not being able to see the pictures!

Their task: Retell the story with as many supporting details as you can, using the pictures from the story to prompt you.

This was a very successful lesson and the children seemed to really enjoy this story. I had high rates of engagement and completion of their task. The children were easily able to access the task and knew what was expected of them to complete it.

Their recordings were quite different in terms of detailed content. I had some very good examples of confident retells that I played back to the whole class, which I believe was a valuable learning experience for all.
