Direct Instruction
The learning intention for this lesson was for the children to create a narrative based on the picture prompt from Pobble365, called 'Batman After Work'.
The video shows the class being introduced to their task as well as some small group work with my 'Bubbles' group.
Reflection
I really enjoy, whenever possible, including topics and characters of high interest at Writing time. It really does make a noticeable difference in engagement, particularly from my reluctant writers. It also encourages discussions between children, which I believe are highly valuable.
I think this was a great lesson to allow for children to be as creative as they felt comfortable to be with the story. I loved the way John remembered and used my idea of Batman needing to clean his suit. There was a good degree of ownership of these stories, which I think helped get so many of them to full completion, to the point where almost all children blogged their work. They quickly received comments on these blogs from older family members which made them feel very proud of their work.
