Direct Instruction
This video shows me reading excerpts from Roald Dahl's 'The Twits' to my Reading class. You will see the enthusiasm the students have for this book now that we are a few chapters in, as well as the deliberate pauses I make and questions I ask, to support their thinking and prepare them for their follow up task.
Further down this page, is a quick 3 minute video, of my Cats reading group, discussing how we went with the EE, and what predictions we have made for the next part of the story.
Reflection
I really enjoy sharing my love of reading with my class and at times the traditional reading group setting doesn't allow for this. Being able to dive deeply into a text and go on a journey with the characters, is something the children I teach don't get to do nearly often enough.
I am fortunate to take a class of very capable readers. The activities that I have designed are intended for my class of Purple - Emerald ability readers. It is nice as a Year 2 teacher, to be able to move away from emphasising decoding skills, and focus more fully on comprehending a text, as well as the simple pleasure of actually enjoying what we are reading!
